Busy guy glued to his phone while the whales came breaching at the famous whale watching beach

Redondo Beach in California, is famous for whale watching. Many tourist and nature lovers are seen waiting to sight the gorgeous whales. But how sad it is that we find ourselves mostly glued to our smart phones that we miss the pleasant sights all around us! Something similar happened with a sailor who was glued to his phone while a humpback whale came breaching just a feet away.

Famous photographer, Eric Smith captured the whale and the sailor. The whale along with its calf came, flapping, breaching, jumping, mouths eating fish, and splashing water but the guy on the boat did not even look up to see that extraordinary sight.

“The whales were breaching off Redondo (Beach) and this small sailboat maneuvered into the spot where the spout occurred. I was roughly 50 feet from the whale and her calf when they surfaced next to the sailboat. The guy never looked up from his phone throughout the entire breach. Two women at the front of the boat were taking pictures but he didn’t notice.”

Eric told CBS News he has 5 pictures and none of them have the guy looking at the whale and its calf.

“We’re all guilty being buried in our phones, even me. You think life is better on your phone, but we’re missing what’s happening around us.”
